Analysis of execution and visual search behavior on return action in Squash

Abstract

The objective of the present study was to analyse the visual behaviour (localisation, duration and number of fixations, and percentage of viewing time) and execution (with four different categories) of squash players with different levels of expertise in the technical and tactical skill of the service return. The sample was composed of 84 players, divided into four expertise levels (First National Division, Second National Division, regional level, and provincial level). The Squash-Performance Evaluation Tool (S-PET) was utilised to register the performance level according to the expertise level, and the eye movement registration system Mobile Eye ASL laboratories was utilised to analyse the visual behaviour. The results show two differentiated visual strategies: one corresponds to the First National Division players (who focused their gaze around the ball) and the other corresponds to the Second National Division, regional level, and provincial level players (who did not focus their gaze on the ball, but instead looked at the front wall during the first part of the movement)

El objetivo del presente estudio ha sido analizar el comportamiento visual (localización, número y duración de las fijaciones visuales) y la ejecución de jugadores de squash de diferente nivel de pericia en el gesto técnico-táctico del resto al servicio. La muestra estaba compuesta por 84 jugadores, divididos en cuatro niveles de pericia (Primera categoría nacional, Segunda categoría nacional, nivel autonómico y nivel provincial). Se utilizó la Herramienta de Evaluación del Rendimiento en Squash (HERS) para el registro del nivel de ejecución según el nivel de pericia y el sistema de registro de los movimientos oculares Mobile Eye de los laboratorios ASL para analizar el comportamiento visual. Los resultados muestran dos estrategias visuales diferenciadas, una corresponde a los jugadores de Primera categoría nacional (centran su mirada alrededor de la pelota) y otra que corresponde y es similar en los jugadores de Segunda categoría nacional, nivel autonómico y nivel provincial (no centran su mirada en la pelota, pues en la primera mitad del movimiento miraron a la pared frontal)
